There are therapy dogs for all kinds of problems, from hyperactive disorders to seizures. A certain type of therapy dog helps children feel safe when they have to be a witness in the courtroom. It is not an exaggeration to say that testifying can be a stressful event, especially for a child. That’s why a therapy dog is a great way to reassure them in such situations. Karl, the deaf therapy dog changed a little girl’s life forever. This is their story.
A Court Dog
Growing up and being an adult with responsibility is known to be incredibly scary for most children. This is especially true when it comes to testifying in court. But many children have to cope with such situations. One little girl had to testify after someone had hurt her.
She Was Frozen
The little girl froze as she saw the man who was hurting her. No one could blame her for reacting the way she did, but she had to pull herself together since her testimony was crucial, and everyone knew it. That’s when Karl, the court dog, came to the rescue.
About Karl
Karl is not an average therapy dog. He is a five-year-old white boxer who weighs 65 kilos. He’s a member of Companions for Courage and a K-9 dog, who has the right to appear in court to offer support to children who testify.
The K-9th Circuit Program
The dogs in the K-9th program are special and are used to protect children testifying in courtrooms. Recognizing the need for trauma-sensitive measures, US courts now use therapy dogs.
More About Karl
While every therapy dog is special, Karl is unique since he is deaf. His deafness is actually his greatest asset. This means he is not distracted by the noise in the courtroom and can concentrate fully on those he is supporting.
Calm and Organized
Karl’s calm behavior makes him one of the most popular among children. His huge size makes these children feel safe and protected. He also comes to the courtroom dressed in very funny clothes to put the children at ease.
A Challenge
Training Karl was a real challenge because of his deafness. Karl’s handler Joanne had trained three boxers before adopting Karl but had never trained a deaf dog before. Karl needed a special kind of training as he could not hear the commands.
The Solutions
Joanne came up with a creative solution that allowed Karl to follow orders. Karl was able to learn American Sign Language and commands were issued to him using this language. He soon became the best at the job.
Enjoying Life
Despite being a special needs dog, Karl has overcome his difficulties and is now enjoying life as a therapy dog. He loves bringing joy to the elderly, children, and everyone he comes into contact with during his work. Plus, it is his disability that makes him a great therapy dog for the court.

The role of these therapy dogs in the K-9 is to help make these sad events easier to deal with. They are there to give the children, who are witnessing, the courage to come forward about what happened. and to make the process easier for them.
The Little Girl’s Encounter
There are certain things that should never happen to a little girl. The little girl knew that the man who was abusing her would be in the courtroom, and she was very afraid to see him again. That’s why Karl was there, to help her feel safe.
One Problem
However, there was one big problem Karl faced while working. Most of the children did not know sign language and could not communicate with him. Joanne understood this and came up with an idea to solve this communication problem.
The Hand Signal
Karl soon became incredibly popular in the courtroom as a therapy dog after Joanne taught him a special hand signal. The children felt as if they were using a secret code when talking to Karl this way. This allowed him to save the day on several occasions.
Therapy Dogs in Courtrooms
The use of therapy dogs in courtrooms is becoming increasingly common. This is especially true for younger victims who are required to testify. One girl was in serious need for a therapy dog as she turned to Joanne before entering the courtroom and asked something embarrassing.
A Difficult Case
The little girl’s case was difficult, and she wanted to know if Karl would protect her. She was very afraid after meeting the man who was abusing her. That’s why it was a great advantage to have Karl there for her.
Being Nervous
Karl sat next to the little girl throughout the preparation sessions and the testimonies. This gave the girl courage to speak up, even though she was incredibly worried. When she entered the courtroom, the little girl was genuinely afraid to face the abuser.
The Hero
The little girl gave a sign to Karl, who came and sat down next to her, providing the support and reassurance she needed. Karl was there to comfort her, and she could stroke his hand over his fur. It gave her the strength she needed.
A Support System
The little girl, with Karl’s help, started to testify, and the dog wouldn’t leave her side. Thanks to this, the little girl was able to get through the whole trial without any problems. All the suffering paid off. But no one expected what would happen after the trial.
A Huge Difference
Karl’s story spread like wildfire, reaching millions of people around the world. Everyone seemed to love him for what he had done for the little girl. It helped to promote the helping program he was part of.
What Happened?
After the trials were over, Karl continued to support the children who had to testify. He did not disappear from these children’s lives once the trial was over. He continues to support them, even when they were out of the courtroom.
A Hero
Karl is not aware of the fact that he is a true hero to all the children he meets. He continues to work as a therapy dog in the courtroom, constantly making sure he does his job to the best of his ability. His disability has not stopped him from being the best.
Not Just a Job
Karl does not simply treat these children as patients he is about to help. He treats the children in the courtroom as friends. The little girl is not the only one who has received safety from Karl. The therapy dog also received love and affection from him in return, something every dog craves for.

One of the best things about it all is that the Companion for Courage team gets a lot of love while working. All the children and elderly people these therapy dogs work with are filled with love.
Worker of the Month
No single therapy dog should ever be the employee of the month alone, because they are all great at what they do. All this does not matter anyway, they don’t care about any of that. These therapy dogs only care about making those around them feel safe.
Waiting Patiently
Courtrooms are a real waiting game, so patience is required there. Karl is very good at it. He has even learned to sit on the bench and wait patiently for his friends to arrive.
The Complete Team
The initiative has blossomed over the years, and now many therapy dogs have been trained to help even more people… Karl’s court work has led to the launch of several programs that help children across the country.
Karl’s Impact
The little girl succeeded in her testimony. So the man who abused her finally got the sentence he deserved. The man went to prison and is now no longer able to hurt anyone. All thanks to a deaf therapy dog called Karl.

Bella is a very sweet, loyal, calm Doberman pinscher who loves attention. She is one of the dogs in the K-9 program and helps provide safety and reassurance to children testifying in the courtroom.
Boomer
Boomer is another therapy dog who is part of the K-9 program. He is a sheltie/poodle mix and was a therapy dog for several years before finally joining the program. He is even working on helping people who want to train their dogs for therapy work.
Daisy-Mai
This cute little dog is called Daisy-Mai and has been working as a therapy dog since 2011. She is a true Pomeranian and is part of the animal therapy team at Nemours Children’s Hospital and Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando.
Kenai
Kenai is a rescued American Atika who had a difficult puppyhood. But his life is much better now, and he is playing a role in making the lives of others happier. His favorite thing in the whole world is a belly rub.
Tilley
Tilley is a nickname, the dog’s full name is Matilda, which means “mighty in battle”. Her name is very apt, as she was still a puppy when she was found sick and abandoned. She was cured and is now a hero to many people she has come into contact with.
Essie
Essie was born in 2012, she is a rescued mixed breed puppy. Working as a therapy dog has allowed her to get to know and love the people she works with. Most notably, she helps her community through the Companions for Courage program.
Josie
Josie was rescued in 2008 and later became a therapy dog. She was a quick learner and was soon in service to provide support to those in need. Since she started working, she has given over 2000 hours of help to children, the elderly, and anyone she has met…
Maverick
Maverick was born in 2014 and is a Golden Doodle who also works as a therapy dog. He loves to walk around everyone he meets in nursing homes and schools, showing off his fluffy fur. He tries to get as many hugs as possible.
