We are all fans of crabs, in one way or another. Some people make them pets while others prefer to see them. Of course, others love to have it as part of a meal. We all have varied reasons for what we like them for. All of us also react differently when we spot one. However, what would you do if you came across a crab that looks different from what you are used to seeing? A huge one. what do you do next?
Well, this happened to Mark and a friend of his. His friend just advised him not to move at all. Mark got confused, slowly placed his phone down, and then turned around. It was then that he spotted from the corner of his eye another claw from the corner swinging to his side. His heart started beating fast as he wondered what kind of creatures those were.
Mark Pierrot
Mark Pierrot, a 32-year-old man, had just had a fantastic morning and was to take a walk alongside his friend David. The two went to Christmas Island where they wanted to discover a hot spring that was quite hidden.
He always enjoyed exploring the outdoors ever since he was young. However, he didn’t know that his passion for exploring would someday lead him on to that day’s very terrible revelation.
The Christmas Island
Christmas Island is a small tropical island found within the Indian Ocean area between two countries, Indonesia and Australia regardless of its winter style title.
Three years before that, Mark had relocated to Iceland, a country that just had 1,400 people as part of its population. He did not intend to stay on the island for long, but he for sure fell deeply in love with it. It harbored an unbelievable secret that he was just about to find out about.
Preparation
Mark got up earlier than he was required to thanks to his excitement to witness with his own eyes the wonders of beautiful Christmas Island. After having his coffee, he got dressed, and with the pleasure, he thought of his previously arranged tour around the place on Saturday alongside David. He packed his suitcase with a beam on his face. At this point, he had no idea just how this day would turn out.
The Start Of An Unexpected Adventure
Mark and David finally met and set out on their trip. They started by going to the Hot spring that they had heard about from the locals. This was apparently the island’s best-kept secret. Only those people who stayed on the island long enough would be told about this place. Mark spotted it immediately but what he would soon find wasn’t right.
The Blocked Path
After about an hour of trekking, Mark spotted something that blocked their way at the time. The two continued to walk across the coastal route, that had trees and greenery bordering on either side. Initially, he thought it was just a giant builder, however, within no time, the enormous form faded as they drew closer. It certainly was not a rock.
Was He Just Seeing Things?
Mark was shocked by what he had just seen. He hadn’t expected this, but what was it? He stared at David, who at the time was not aware of what had just occurred. Mark, being so inquisitive, decided to follow suit to find out whether he was just seeing things or if it was real. That said, he should have just stayed put.
A Crab?!
Mark was in disbelief at what he saw. It had a very large shell that looked like a boulder and it also stuck similarly to a sore thumb on a leaf. This was nothing like all the beautiful colors he had earlier seen. It looked like a crab but certainly not like the kind of crab he was used to seeing around. He, however, decided to move closer to the creature because of his curiosity.
Mesmerized
The creature looked interesting because of its blue, orange, black, and crimson colors. It had springy legs as if to demonstrate the power from its torso. Mark crawled even closer and to his surprise, he noticed some little, sharp spikes that had lined the animal’s legs. Suddenly, the creature clicked and at that moment, Mark just knew exactly what he had come across and he was more than astonished.
Connecting With The Creature
Mark’s intuition told him that this was some kind of prehistoric crab that was about 95 million years in age. He remembered reading about them when he was still younger. He could remember their unique features which he learned about while reading of their demise. Mark looked at the animal’s gigantic dimensions that including its large eyes that have big sockets, the bent claws, and its mouth that looked like a leg. He
The Prehistoric Crab
In the year 2019, some experts in the USA discovered this particular prehistoric crab fossil. The crab species is called perplexed Callichimaera, which when translated means “lovely perplexed chimera.” The name is also thanks to its vivid colors as well as its unique look. Mark reached for his phone so that he could take a picture. It felt almost like he was witnessing the reappearance of a lost species.
Staring In Shock
Mark, upon realizing the creature was harmless, called his friend to come closer. David came out of the bushes murmuring that he had been looking for Mark, as he took time to understand that the enormous creature was right in front of the two of them. He asked David what the creature that was. Mark asked David to take a picture of him next to the animal and what he did next would actually end up stunning the world.
Picking The Crab
Mark carried the crab and positioned himself for the picture with the fascinating creature that at this point appeared friendlier than expected. However, Mark really had no idea what he was dealing with at the time. Without a doubt, he had encountered a species that is thought to be lost. Mark immediately called up the National Park center. At this point, he was becoming even more curious.
An Anomaly
Max Orchard is a crab specialist who for a while had worked with world-leading crab researchers who made their way to or lived on Christmas Island. He had over 22 years of experience working at the Christmas Island National Park. It was an odd creature considering just how many other crab species existed in the area.
De-Extinct or Endangered?
There is a big chance that the creature is either endangered or just de-extinct. Orchid was very aware that it was possible to de-extinct a creature. After all, this is exactly the method scientists use when they want to create similar species or just an extinct organism. It is known as species revivalism. While people often believe that they have just discovered every species on earth, that is not the case as there are more to be discovered.
Another Crab!
Mark, after making a call, hung up and posted the image with the caption “anybody knows what this is?” However, as he continued typing, David started calling him but in a nervous tone. He gasped as he told his friend not to move.
However, as he was typing, David began calling him in a very nervous tone warning him not to move. At first, Mark couldn’t figure out why David was so nervous but then he saw it for himself. Right under his feet was another claw that was about 3 meters.
Fear
Mark was terribly shocked that he dropped his cell phone. He found it amazing that there were two and not just one such creature. He wondered if they had actually been at risk. Since he thought they were friendly, he chose to stay with them and the crab specialist who was so interested in knowing if indeed a long-lost species had been found.
A Coconut Crab?
Mark made a gesture to the creatures when Max the specialist got there. Max looked at them and then looked at Mark with a smirk on his face. He already knew what the creatures were. The two were actually coconut crabs. This is a species of crabs that have been living on Christmas Island for so many decades. Mark then wondered if they were in any way dangerous.
Is He Searching For Something?
Max added that he had once come across the creature species that was 4.5kg heavy. According to him, that was the biggest one he had ever seen. According to him, nobody can tell how old the creatures actually are. There exist some 2 to 3kg of such crabs that are around 50 years old. Max told Mark that this species can be easily considered a cousin of the water-based crab. He then asked Mark to show him his palms. He was looking for something.
A Warning
Although not too many people dared to pick up the crabs, they are actually friendly despite being so gigantic. Max was just making sure Mark did not have any cuts, otherwise, he would have to get a tetanus shot. You can actually get tetanus from wildlife just like any other wound. Well, his hands were alright but Max warned him about one more thing.
A Thief Crab?
According to Orchard, the creature has a tendency to rob people. Mark, therefore, kept his phone inside his pocket and it was now secure from the crab’s reach. Max Orchard then gently picked up his phone to reveal his rare and unusual tendency to crush hapless visitors and even residents.
A Notorious History
Orchard told Mark a few stories he’d heard from the park throughout the years. For example, The Army had come to the Island for training in the early 90s. They came equipped with plastic butts that had newer Steyr guns. During this time, the commander called him to state that someone had stolen some weapons. You can only guess who the real thief was.
Also Known As The Thief Crab
The Coconut Crab (a Thief Crab)! was the actual thief. Much later, they found Steyr’s missing gun. The crabs had pulled it down and broken it. There are a lot of instances where these crabs have taken, or rather stolen cameras and shoes from locals and tourists who visit the area. Once you have stayed on the Island for a long, you will start to find this habit amusing to an extent.
How Long Do They Live?
Coconut crabs aside from being the world’s largest crabs also happen to live the longest when compared to other crabs. They could easily make it to 120 years of age so it is highly likely that Mark’s crab was even older than him. Although they are not exactly harmful, they can easily injure you with their claws. Mark was therefore fortunate.
Right Of Passage
Mark had actually left unharmed even after holding the crab. He was also wondering why none of the locals told him to be careful with them. When they were asked about this, all they said was that they wanted him to learn more about their island by himself. Mark then suddenly received an online notice about the discoveries he had just made.
Online Image
Mark’s image continued to generate a lot of attention online considering how unusual yet so fascinating the beast or you can call it a creature was. No one could ever imagine the creature Mark was carrying if they never lived on Christmas Island. It was almost unbelievable that such animals even exist.
