Golden Retriever Surprises Foster Family After Delivering Her Puppies

36121

Rosie was adopted in 2017 by two very loving parents. She is a golden retriever mix and well, she was expecting some golden puppies. However, what she got was far from what they had all imagined, and for sure, the internet went into a frenzy over the strangely colorful puppies she gave birth to. What happened to the puppies after they grew up was also very strange. Here’s more.

Meet Rosie

Rosie, a golden retriever mix, had been disowned and dumped while pregnant by her former owners back in 2017. The shelter manager was worried about her state of health and the fact that she would end up giving birth without help. Sure there’s a decline in euthanasia but that has also led to overcrowding in shelters and there’s no more space for new puppies.

She Was Rescued

The shelter’s manager decided to reach out to Neuse River Golden Retriever Rescue which is an organization based in Raleigh, North Carolina. It is a non-profit organization that helps dogs find new homes. volunteers care for the dogs until they are ready for the adoption process. Rosie was lucky that one of the people there knew a couple that wanted a dog just like Rosie.

Help Was Near

The following morning after that call was made, a Neuse volunteer went to pick Rosie from that particular shelter he was at. At this point, she looked like she would go into labor any minute. She was checked into the Raleigh Vet Clinic and the vets determined that she was in fact very healthy. All that was left was for the volunteer to find her a home where she would be assisted with her delivery.

John And Katie Black

Since the year 2009, Katie and John Black had provided a foster home to over 20 dogs and had three dogs of their own named Annie, Leroy, and then there was also Winchester. This volunteer was very sure that John and Katie had the required expertise and experience to take care of Rosie and her expected puppies. With so much excitement, the couple welcomed Rosie. On October 28, 2017, which was just five days after Rosie was taken to the shelter, they brought her to their loving home.

Rosie Loved Being With Them

The Blacks took to Instagram to introduce their new foster, Rosie. At this time, Rosie looked a little shy but very sweet. When the time for her to deliver puppies came, the couple gave her all the necessary help. She gave birth to four puppies who really surprised them and also the entire internet, that is, those who saw the puppies.

She Gave Birth

Despite the challenges they faced in the process, Rosie was able to give birth safely. the puppies came in the right size and weight too. since Rosie was large, the couple were expecting the puppies to be a large litter, maybe five or six but Rosie only got four. However, it is not only the Blacks that were surprised.

Not What They Were Expecting

Katie on their social media announced that Rosie had given birth, but to baby cows. The puppies had black spots on them and looked nothing like their mother. Clearly, the father of these puppies was not the same breed as Rosie. The couple named the puppies Daisy, Clarabelle, Moo, and Betsy. People made so many jokes about the newborn puppies when they shared some family photos.

Who The Father Might Be

Golden Retriever Puppies

Because there exist several dog breeds with white fur complete with black spots, it was not very easy to determine who the father’s breed was. Just like Rosie, the father could have been mixed. The internet was left guessing. Could the father be a Dalmatian or English setter, a Wetterhoun or Bluetick Coonhound? Of all the guesses, only Dalmatians have true spots naturally. So they were the most likely candidate or culprit.

Spotted Pups

Katie’s father was so shocked that he was the one who suggested they post the picture of the pups online. He said that if she posted the picture on Reddit it would go viral and he was so right. They blew the internet. Rosie, in the photo also looked rather surprised just like everyone else. The photo was liked by over 90,000 users and had over 1,600 comments from people just asking about the new family. The moment they posted the picture on Instagram, the popularity became even more.

Just Like Their Dad

According to the Nest, certain traits can be inherited by puppies. Characteristics from their parents that is. The dominant genes will usually outrank the recessive ones. This is what the Australian Shepherd Health & Genetics Institute said. From the looks of things, Rosie passed down the recessive genes while the father gave them the dominant ones. So all the puppies got their father’s characteristics.

The Internet Loved Them

Redditors were so amused by the cow puppies and also their mother judging from her expression. One person commented saying ho she feels there had been a mix-up. Others said Rosie looked like she had been mentally defending her little ones from the photos. Others saw absolutely no problem with the appearance of the puppies despite there being those who thought there was such a big mix-up.

Defending Herself

Other internet users suspected that the Blacks had intentionally bred two foster care rescues. However, Katie made it very clear to such people that Rosie was already expecting her puppies by the time she got to them. They already had three adopted dogs and were ready to have others adopt Rosie and her four puppies once they were all healthy and ready for new families.

Rosie Wasn’t Doing Good

Rosie was not in the best health after she had given birth. The couple discovered that Rosie had some kind of infection after giving birth. They took her to see a specialist who prescribed some antibiotics that she was to take over the next few weeks. It was highly likely that she had Metritis which is a bacterial infection that affects the uterus shortly after giving birth. This infection would subsequently cause a reduction in Rosie’s milk supply. She was very fortunate to have the couple helping her in taking care of her little puppies.

They Helped Rosie Heal

The Blacks played a huge role in helping Rosie get healed. they would take care of the puppies and even though they knew they would not be able to keep all the four puppies, they treated them like they were their very own puppies. Fortunately, Rosie got healed quite fast. She took over the feeding of her little ones. She was back to being a happy and very healthy mother. that said, the puppies also grew up experiencing a few challenges.

A Good Mom

While social media users did their best to understand the very strange relationship, Rosie was not in the least bit bothered. For so many weeks, she would cuddle with her puppies and well they all became nice and healthy. Rosie was indeed a proud mother of four according to Kate. She always just wanted to be with her little ones even when Kate would move them.

Not Uncommon

It really is not uncommon to come across puppies that do not look like their parents or members of their litter. When it’s a matter of non-pedigree dogs, there is a lot of scope for the variance. So the puppies can be in a variety of colors and can have different physical manifestations. This is always mesmerizing for onlookers though. Imagine that, Rosie’s puppies actually looked like cows. They however started looking more and more like dogs when they grew up.

They Are In Good Paws

Kate and John looked after the dogs so well and also kept people on the internet updated on how they were doing. The puppies loved their mother and would always lie next to her. According to the Black couple, Clarabelle was first to show her true colors, it was obvious that she was going to be the loudest of all the dogs. Their personalities became more evident as they grew.

Growing Bigger And Bigger

The pups had only been around for a few weeks by December of the same year, 2017. At that age, you could already tell that they had very distinct personalities. Kate posted a picture on her social media, explaining how much of a sweetheart Daisy was but that she was often anxious or fearful. On the other hand, Clarabelle was hilarious and had such a fearless spirit. Moo was the pup that loved being held and snuggled. Moo would always cry for attention while according to her, Betsy was the most gentle one amongst the pups and she wanted to keep her.

The Pups Were Separated

Betsy and Clarabelle were eventually adopted by two separate families during January 2018’s first week. The Blacks were so sad to watch them leave but they had made sure that all the puppies would get the best families, love, and the attention they needed. Daisy was also taken in by another family who gave her the name Lily. Moo was also adopted and was called Barkley by the adopting family. All the puppies had their own Instagram accounts.

Saying Goodbye To Her Pups

Rosie has since also found her very own forever home. Although her departure was not easy for the blacks, they were at least happy that she would end up with a family that loves her and would not abandon her for anything. That said, Rosie is no longer allowed to have puppies and chances are she would never see he very own puppies again, but at least they would all have a great home and families to take care of them.
